Over the years, biomechanics has played a critical role in musculoskeletal pathology, treatment, and rehabilitation and is emerging as a new health frontier.
To this end, AposHealth® offers an FDA-cleared, non-invasive treatment for knee osteoarthritis, to help temporarily reduce knee pain and improve daily function by manipulating a patient’s biomechanics, without the side effects and costs associated with surgery and other MSK treatments. It is also a non-FDA cleared wellness device which can help patients live well with other MSK conditions, such as chronic low back and hip pain. It is based on a unique technology that uses a personalized footworn device to modify a patient’s walking pattern.
AposHealth®’s biomechanical effect works by temporarily shifting pressure from affected areas, while the neuromuscular re-education of the muscles re-enforces a healthier walking pattern, even when not actively wearing the device.
“AposHealth® is uniquely positioned to help knee osteoarthritis and low back patients live well by providing temporary pain management and functional improvement, while providing clinicians with a new service offering that delivers a value-based approach to musculoskeletal conditions” says Dr. Cliff Bleustein, Global President and CEO of AposHealth®.
In recent years, the US has seen an increase in knee pain and related conditions, partially driven by a rapid rise in obesity, which now impacts around 32 percent of adults. The additional weight on the body adds pressure to the joints, increasing the chances of getting a total knee replacement by 8.5 times for an individual with a body mass index over 30, compared to someone in the “normal” weight category.
Patients can get AposHealth® after a thorough clinical evaluation including questionnaires, history and physical exam, and a visual gait assessment. The participating providers also perform a laboratory gait assessment to obtain objective measurements of gait function, including velocity, step length, and single-limb support. Based on these parameters, a therapist calibrates a footworn device using proprietary methodology to attach convex pods to rails built into the bottom of the device.
AposHealth® is a clinically proven, non-invasive, FDA-cleared, solution for knee osteoarthritis — without changing patients’ daily routine and may act as a potential alternative to surgery. The treatment may result in improved mobility, high patient satisfaction rate, and economic benefits to payors, providers, and participating practitioners
The individual is re-tested for pain and gait function and the device is adjusted until it has optimized its impact.
Personalized to fit every individual, the device is a complement to daily activities at home or work. By wearing the device for about an hour a day while going about normal activity, patients have seen demonstrable improvement in both pain and gait patterns. One of the major advantages of AposHealth® is that the program allows for at-home treatment with up to 5 visits a year with a healthcare professional. This may save the patients from the trouble of physical office visits, and reduce their potential exposure to COVID-19 from frequent visits to the clinics and doctors. To date, the product has been used by more than 100,000 patients globally, to temporarily reduce pain, improve walking patterns, and elevate quality of life. Backing it up are more than 60 publications in peer reviewed journals including a recent publication in JAMA showing that 83% knee osteoarthritis patients treated with AposHealth® reported more than a 50% reduction in pain compared to 42% in an active control group.*
Continuing to bring new technologies and solutions to the marketplace, AposHealth® will focus on improving mobility and function through advanced motion analysis and functional gait retraining anytime, anywhere. The company is also looking forward to enabling its clients to do visual and laboratory gait assessments using sensors with the help of their phone. With a strong focus on research, AposHealth® will continue to work with leading academic medical centers to perform additional clinical trials on the effectiveness and outcomes of AposHealth® in various medical conditions. “Our mission is to give individuals suffering from neuromuscular and musculoskeletal conditions the power to move by combining science and innovation to help them live an active, rich, and happy life” concludes Dr. Cliff Bleustein.
